Loosey Goosey M46 shift lever 200 1986

Just how much free movement is acceptable in the shift lever of my M46 manual trans +OD? In gear the knob can be moved through an arch of ~2in side to side and ~1in front to back. I can also "pick up" the lever ~1/2in! My Bently's has the procedure for adjusting the reverse lockout but there are no other specs or adjustment details. All four forward gears and reverse operate smoothly and I don't need to "hunt" to find the gears when I shift.
