removing front strut 200

Hello,

i am in the middle of removing the front struts on my 81 240 and took out the strut assembly, compressed the springs and gor the IPD tool to turn the nut BUT when i try to hold the SHAFT, it seems to be LOCKED IN PLACE since iwill not turn and the shaft is starting to deform, how did everyone remove the nut from the shaft??
