1973 145 D-Jetronic. Very erratic idle. A challengine problem. 140-160

You said you had a problem with sticking valves. I wonder if they may be sticking when hot and then freeing-up after it cools down a bit. Do you think you could get it good and warm (to where it idles bad) and quickly remove the plugs and run a compression test?

Can you narrow the problem to a particular cylinder by pulling plug wires one at a time while it's idling and try to find one that has little effect when removed? If it appears that there are two bad cylinders and two good cylinders, then the prime suspect is one of the trigger points.
