steering boxes 1800

I finally replaced the old worn steering box in my '73 1800ES with an earlier model from Howard Silverman. However the steering box i just bought doesn't fit the same way. After some adjusting I was able to get the steering box into the car and hooked up. However, now I hear a lot of rattleing, from the firewall where the steering shaft comes through. Could it be that earlier steering boxes are different than the original box i had in my car? This new one has a "reinforced" looking cover on top, wherein my old steering box was "smooth" on top.
