I bought this car without really knowing anything about it. It started having odd electrical problem (headlights randomly off, horn randomly not working etc) and often it would not start unless jumped. The battery voltage was checked and even with the engine revving it would not go up. So we got the alternator rebuilt. After putting in different gasoline and fuel injector cleaner, the car started having the same symptoms, at first taking a long time to start and then not starting at all. We jumped the car, got it a mile away and then it died at the stop sign. The driver complained about the accelerator not responding before the final death. We jumped the car again, but it would die when shifting gears. At some point, it ran for a minute, but the engine sounded really horrible and black smoke came from the rear. A passing motorist who used to be a mechanic pointed out some burned wires to the alternator...not fully burned but slightly damaged. He said the motor may have been acting funny because there wasn't enough energy to burn the fuel. We towed the car to the people who replaced the alternator and they said the alternator was fine and did not take blame for the burned wires. I have no money to spend on this car...I'm so distraught. Any suggestion on what could be the problem? A funny thing I noticed is, beside when put it in gear, when the jumper cable is removed from the battery while running, the car would also shut off like the cable was creating a circuit.
