What is wrong with my cruise control? Help! 200

I have a 1992 240 wagon. I love this car. Anyway, I drive long distance in it all of the time, but my cruise control does not work so you can imagine what a 2,000 mile drive will do to your cramping foot and leg on the gas pedal! When I am cruising (required minimum for cruise control is 35 mph), I turn on the switch and push the set button on my cruise control option and I hear something trying to work, sounds like the little pump in the hood is turning and the gears are working yet nothing happens! Does anybody have any ideas, I have another road trip ahead soon and it would finally be nice to give my poor leg a rest!

Dr. Chuck
