A few questions 200

I've decided that I'm going to get my 89' 244 fixed so that it will pass emissions, rather than find a mob garage and purchase a sticker. Just as a re-cap, the car failed for both NOx and HC. NJ's NOx limit for my car is 1273. I failed at 3538. HC limit is 167...I failed by one point, at 168.

In talking with my mechanic, we deemed it to (possibly) be one of two things--although I said I'd go here first before anything else. One is the catalytic converter. The other is the O2 sensor.

I guess my question is this: What else could cause my NOx readings to be this high? Also, what should I figure on spending for a new convertor? My mechanic said he'd let me buy my own converter, and he'd install it. Second, would the O2 sensor really make that big of a difference with NOx, and should I replace that, too? Come to think of it, would I be able to replace an O2 sensor myself, without any mechanical expertise?

Thanks in advance...

Steve
