Achieved the Goal, Weather or Speed? 900

1993 T-Rex. Tuesday, I had to drive from central NC to western NC and back, about 330 miles. One of the worst longer drives in recent memory due to the remnants of hurricane Frances, especially on flip side. With an honest fill the next day, to my surprise I got 30.3 MPG (my goal). On the way there, up hill, I had to battle keeping the car in a higher speed to reduce the down shifts to third. On the way back, almost solid heavy rain, dark as hell, slick roads, down hill, spun out cars, 80F and thick humidity.

Tom’s rule, never (almost never) apply brakes going down hill. I had to abandon it on this trip. I applied the brakes lightly while not allowing the car to gain too much momentum. I hated that. I could not safely go over 50-55 MPH, 40 at times. On flat ground at times, I was just trying to go fast enough to keep the TC locked.

Well, I am not sure if the help came from the high humidity or the lower speeds. Probably a little of both.
