A few M40 transmission questions 200 1975

Hello all,

I am trying to determine if I should get a locally available, year-unknown, M40 for back-up internal-gears for my 1975 M41.

- What year did the M40 appear first with the linkage-tunnel/short-shifter?

- Is it's linkage-tunnel/short-shifter an indication that this M40's gears would be compatible with my 1975 M41?

- Finally, is there a resource for M40 serial-numbers? This local M40's numbers, on the right-side of it's casing, are 380100 L5M K4. My 1975 M41's numbers are 380100 I15N K4.

As usual, thanks in advance to all the helpful people on this board.
