Question about 700 series window switches 700

Okay, let me begin by saying that my total knowledge of electrics would fill
a matchbox cover. A very small one ;-).

Soooo... I am in the process of installing door switches for my '75 164e
power windows (to replace the clumsy OE setup with switches on the console). The switches are from the passenger door of 700 series.

When they did not work as (I figured) Nature intended, it occurred to me
that these are from a car that has a lockout on the driver's 'master' switch
panel. I assume that is what accounts for the fifth wire hooked to the
switch.

Here is my question: what is the switch looking for, from that wire? Ground?
I tried putting a ground on it, and it still would not work, so I have
reached the end of my 12v universe....

Sorry if this is blindingly obvious, but trust me, I only do 12v electrics,
and then only when the chances of frying my car are minimal.

cheers
