2 mufflers? S90-V90 1997

Just wondering why I have two of these things on my 1997 960.
Somebody said the one closer to the engine is a resonator and the second one is the muffler. If that's what it is, what does a resonator do?
Any possibility of getting a little more power out of the engine if it's removed giving less restriction in the exhaust system?
