Question: Green Gunk from AC hose 900 1993

Brickboarders,

I was looking under the hood of my '93 944t 112K this weekend when I saw what looked like a green pasty film that had been deposited on the plastic belly pan of my car below the water pump.

I thought it was dried coolant at first and then touched it and it had the consistency of soft vaseline. After inspecting the hoses in the area, I saw that there was a small rip in the hose that leads from my ac compressor to the condensor in front of the radiator.

What is this gunk, oil for the compressor? Will replacing the hose fix this? My ac seems to run fine, but I haven't been using it much since I saw the problem. Is this something a shade tree mechanic like myself can repair. If this is oil from my compressor, do I risk ruining my compressor if I use my ac? I don't understand why my ac still cools if I have a leak like this.

I appreciate all your input and help with this.

Mike
