Whinning noise when a turn, is it the RACK? 700 1987

Hi friends,

I have an 87 760 GLE. I noticed a few months ago, my steering boot was torn a bit. I didnt have time to replace it because I was not well. Now when I drive, there is a whinning noise when I try to make a turn, either way. Could it be that I need to replace the Steering rack, or is it just lacking oil/grease because of the torn boot. Ive been quoted a rebuilt one at CND $340, but Id rather not spend all that $ if its only a matter of boot and some grease.

If it is the rack, do you think I still have some time before the car breaks down on me?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hienzz,

'87 760 GLE, 237000KM.
