Stuck A/C lever 700 1990

On my commute to work this morning in my 1990 740GLE 16V, I moved the climate control lever all the way to the left for "Max A/C" (biggest snowflake) for a few minutes, and when I got cold enough, found that the lever was completely stuck in this left-most position. Tried for several minutes to force it over to the right, totally unsuccessfully. Figured that rather than put way more force on it and break something, I'd see if anyone else has had this happen before ...

Any ideas on what has gone wrong? It feels like something has got the lever locked firmly in place, I can't even get it halfway over to the next setting to the right.

Ideas anyone? Thanks so much!
