What damage might be done by hooking up jumper cables backwards? 700 1990

There's a 90 740 for sale. The owner says his son tried to jump start
it with the cables reversed. He says the engine will sputter and just
barely run now. Would a used ECU fix it, or is there likely to be
additional electrical damage?
