Another timing belt question or two 200

First, I read somewhere that to secure the crank on a manual tranny, you can just make sure it is in gear and not have to worry about the various methods of doing it. That sounds wrong to me. Is it?

Second, does the crank tool that IPD and other sell work on a pre-1985 Volvo with the normal crank pulley (no rubber inside)? If so, it looks like a simple way to make sure the crank pulley is held in check with no risk of damaging the enginge.
