'85 240 stalls when acclerating from idle. 200 1985

Hello all,
This is starting to get ugly and embarrasing. A few months ago on the way home, I noticed that as I tried to accelerate from idle, the car would stall unless I accelerated very slowly. When I got home, I started to check the connections to the air flow meter, the air flow valve, the, hum, smells like smoke, oh, the harness is on fire...

I pulled the ground lead off the battery and put out the fire and figgured that this was the cause of the stalling problem. It was the orriginal harness so it had been on borrowed time for about, well, 15 years.

I replaced the harness and started tracking down things killed by the shorts that resulted from the fire. Electronic ignition computer, distributor hall sensor and several fuses. At this point, the car would now run, but it had a very erratic idle and tended to stall on acceleration from idle. I checked for air leaks and loose hoses, timing settings, compression, (starting to get deserate...) In all, I messed with it for several weeks and finally gave up and took it to the local Volvo dealer and asked them to put a few hours into diagnosing the problem.

The mechanic informed me that it was a hard one because there were two problems. He believed that the stalling before the fire and the fire might have been a cooincidence. The air flow valve had been stuck and he had freed it up. He also said that the stalling on accleration from idle was due to a bad air flow meter. He pointed out that while the engine was still a little, (very little) rough at idle, it smoothed out to a perfect purr when the air flow meter was disconnected. He said that this was indicitive of a meter failure. I thanked him, paid for 5 hours of expert help and went home to fix the problem.

Based on this information, I measured the resistance of the air flow meter and it was a little out of tollarance, not much, but it was out. So, I purchased an aftermarket airflow meter and installed it. No change.

In a fit desperation, I went to the local pick a part, found an '85 and pulled the fuel injection computer, another ignition computer, the air flow control valve, and the throttle body. (Hey, if nothing else, I have spares for the car and they are starting to get a little hard to get.) I have now swapped all of the parts but the throttle body and none of them have made a bit of difference. The throttle I got was in good shape, but it is really gooked up and before I take the time to clean/rebuild it, I thought it would be a good idea to see if there is some help to be had out there.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Mike
