Just a little more speed from my 244? 200 1988

I have an '88 5-speed 244, with 101K miles. It runs well, but it's just too slow for merging onto the highway safely--at least in the DC area, where everyone drives like they're fleeing the Mongol hordes.

What simple things can I do to improve performance? Would using premium fuel do anything? What about replacing the relatively new Michelin tires?

It's even crossed my mind to do a 5-cyl conversion, but this engine is in too good a condition to scrap it. Is there anything less drastic I could ask my mechanic (a true 240 expert) to do that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg?

Thanks!

John
