Noise in Heater? 700 1986

I have a beauty old '86 760 Turbo.

It recently developed a noise in the heater motor area of the car (inside dash in front of passenger).

At first I thought it was something in the squirrelcage of the heater motor, rolling around loose. Closer inspection showed that not only did the noise continue with no alteration of frequency or intesity even at different fan speeds, but the noise persisted even after disconnecting the power to the fan (purple and green wires under passenger-side dash.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be or what a fix might be?
I'd like to have more info about what I'm dealing with before I tear the whole heater assembly apart.

Thanks in advance.
