How important are sway bar bushings? 700 1991

I am trying to fix a front-end metallic clunk sound that I am convinced is not related to the struts. My neighbor across the street does a lot of work on his cars and suggested sway bar bushings. Interestingly enough, IPD doesn't sell them for the 700 series, just the 200 series, and FCPGroton does sell them, for two different sizes (19mm and 21mm). I read a lot on this board about sway bar links and their bushings, but the effects of a worn sway bar bushing don't seem to come up. Any experience with this, anyone?
