No click. Car cannot start after starter replacement 900 1995

940 non-turbo

Finally replaced the starter with a used one. Car started alright for two days and then no click, no start. Mechanic replaced the alarm relay and car started on first crank. One day later, same no click situation.

Had to short the start by cranking from battery with a wire attached to the starter and the other end to the positive terminal of battery.

What could be the problem? I thought it was the transmission safety switch so I wriggle the gear lever up and down the P to start but no luck. So what else could cause a no click, no start situation?

Confirm by mechanic that it cannot be the solenoid because if it is, shorting the starter to the battery will not work either.

Anyone can give some better pointers? Perhaps this may give some hint: No click only comes when car has been driven for some time and engine cabinet hot.

Thanks.
