Manual Transmission locked in overdrive? 200 1985

I sure hope this is simple!!!!My friends transmission seem to be stuck in overdrive! He loaned his 240 station wagon out to a friend of his that was unsure on how to use reverse, apparently she kept pushing the overdrive button as she was trying to get it into gear, somehow she it seems like the transmission is now engaged fifth gear...reverse works fine, he just doesnt have any pickup on first or second now!I worked on his car last week, there was no issue with the transmission at all. The car is 90 miles away, so if anyone has any clues that I can share with him I would greatly appreciate it.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
