intermitent acceleration problem '88 760 T 700 1988

I have a low mileage (145,000 km) '88 760T. Frequently after running normally for a while, it will accelerate only very slowly to about 60 kph and not above. Tach will not go much above 2,000. If I put it in neutral tach revs fine over 4,000. If I turn the engine off and start it up again this usually fixes the problem. This is not weather dependant.
Anyone have any ideas and soln.
