ATM rough shift into 2nd 200 1984

My 84 automatic has very gradually acquired a 'clunk' going from 1st to 2nd. It happens maybe 50% of the time now, and seems to depend on how fast I want to acclerate. Sometimes there's a pretty good jolt. When I bought the car 2 years ago, the AT fluid had a slow leak from where the speedometer cable enters the transmission. I replaced the seal and keep the fluid at the correct level, but I'm thinking that the previous owner may have let it get low.
Any experience with this sort of thing? I'm thinking this business is like hair loss - the process doesn't reverse itself, does it? Thanks.
