What do you need to install a new camshaft? 140-160

Um, I have found an engine that wore down the lobes nearly equally all around... D%*n thing would not run with stock valve lash due to no overlap. Ended up reducing the lash by 1/2 (where it was before I "corrected" it) just so it would run. Owner sold it a few months later (I had advised a new motor).

Insofar as the original query is concerned...

Lifters are common as dirt Chevy units.
No real reason to change cam, agreed, unless you have a wiped lobe or you just want more poop.
Bare minimum to replace cam is as stated by John.
You may be able to get away with re-using the intake/exhaust manifold gaskets as you just put them on (right?). And even though John is leery, you may also be OK with the cam gear.
New thrust plate is pretty much mandatory.
Good time to swap over to neoprene crank seal timing cover.
You may also need to fabricate a trough for catching lifters that don't want to come out the top.

Probably a better investment of time and money to rebuild your other engine properly than sink money into this (running) beast.

Mike!
