Diesel Oiling Problem?

Greetings,

This one is for the diesel experts. I'm a Volvo newbie, just bought a non-running '85 760 GLE TD as a project. Story is that the head was reworked by a non-diesel mechanic, who didn't know how to set the injection timing. I will be attempting to resurrect it during the fall. Since I only "know" what I've been told, I intend to check valve timing and compression before even looking at the IP.

In doing research on the Volvo diesel's I've read about an oiling "problem" associated with these motors. Is this problem in the head or the block?

If in th head, has anyone ever tried to modify the head by installing an oil supply tube to the cam towers like on MB heads? Is this a stupid idea?

Thanks for any input.

Mike
