240 ignition 200 1987

the car died while driving, in a fashion similar to a broken timing belt. As an amatuer, none of my friends would listen to my suggestions and told me the timing belt may not affect the lack spark or impulse. Also,the car hasn't started in a week, but, according to the temp. gauge, it's running hot when the key is turned on. So, if by chance it is not the timing belt, could the sending unit be the problem? Thank you all for your time and knowlege. I appreciate all your suggestions.
