check engine light on 1990 760....help 700 1990

Hey my car has randomly shut off while i was driving about 5 to 10 mph the last couple of days and the check engine light came on. Anyone know what this could be? Also, is there a way to check the code without a code reader? On my old BMW you could push the gas pedal five times and the check light would flash a certain amount of time and tell you the code, is there a way to do that on my car?
