car dies after shift into second 200 1983

The beast is a '83 242 Turbo. It was driving normally just prior and after a stop sign it conked out as I shifted from 1st to 2nd. It will not restart. It cranks, but to no avail. Strange it would just stall like that. All the hoses are tight. I checked the timing belt: the cam moves as I turn the crank bolt. Swapped in a different fuel pump realy, but no change. Fuses are good. Swapped in an old coil; no difference. Plugs are not fouled. The car is still stranded so I have been unable to do further work.
I've had this car since March and have been getting up to speed so all tune up items are new except the timming belt. The only problem with the car is that it runs very rich (smoke and hesitation) for the first minute or two. Otherwise it runs quite well.
Anyone have a similar situation occur? Thanks for any help.
