Urgent help needed, tranny problems in WV 200 1992

Hey folks, hope you can help.

I brought the family to WV for a 300 mile trip in our 92 245 with automatic transmission. The car ran beautiful all the way down but now that we are ready to leave for home, I'm having some problems.

When I start the wagon and put it in drive, it positively catches first and begins to roll just as it should. The problem is that it will not shift out of first. After driving about 5 minutes or so, shifting from Drive to Park, and through the other gears, and shutting the car off and restarting it will resume normal operation. Once it begins acting normally, it will continue until parked and shut off.

The fluid is full and of clear color. No obvious leaks or looseness in the shift linkage.

I am obviously apprehensive about heading back over the mountains towards Ohio. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rody
