Hard Shifting 200

I recently purchased my third volvo, 1992 244 DL 5Speed (my first Volvo manual tranny), and everything is going great except when I try to put the car in reverse after driving in the forward gears (obviously after coming to a stop) I cannot engage third. The gears just spins and makes that terrible grinding noise. Note: this does not occur everytime I shift into reverse, it seems sporadic.

Also, sometimes at stop lights or in traffic if I disengage the car from gear it's often difficult to get back into first. Since I'm not a fan of forcing the car into gear I was wondering if anyone else has had these problems, what they were and how they were fixed?
