Brittle electrical connecter on fuel tank... 700 1986

Hi Guys... what is the black oval electrical conector on top of the fuel pump/sending unit access door? Tell me it is just the ground for the fuel gauge and not the power lead for the pump, 'cause it was so brittle that it broke-off with the slightest touch! The car still runs, although I haven't actually driven it. I was trying to diagnose a dead fuel gauge when it broke off and if it's just for the gauge, I'll leave it alone.

Cheers!
