My 780 Turbo Engine sounds like a Diesel Engine 700 1990

I have a 1990 780 Turbo and when the car sits idle the engine sounds like the diesel engines. There is a knoking noise coming from the engine even though the car runs smooth while driving at normal speeds. Not sure where this noise is coming from, and don't know what the knock sensor function is. The Car also runs rough while sitting at idle almost as if it's going to quit, but stays on. Any information you folks can provide will be greatly appreciated.
