keyless entry problem S90-V90

My wife's 1997 Volvo V90 has a problem with its remote locking which
has become erratic. We have three remotes and have replaced the
batteries and gone through the setting up procedure which involves
switching the ignition on and off 5 times, leaving it on the fifth
time, then pressing the button on the remotes. This sort of works but
the controls only function first time about 80% of uses and sometimes
perhaps a dozen clicks are needed.

This morning there was a complete failure and my wife had to use the
key to enter the car which triggered the immobiliser. Rescuing her
involved disconnecting the battery and setting up again. Confidence
has now been destroyed. Anyone have any advice or web site references
please
