Anyone else had this problem? 700 1987

Bilstein or Boge. The latter is the OEM supplier. Your judgement of Bilstein's plastic sleeve is misguided. Plastic is a fantastic material when used in the proper application. The outer sleeve of the shock is only there to protect the shaft from dirt and dust. In this application, it's a better choice than metal because it won't rust.

You will have a hard time finding a shock or strut that's built with cheaper components than Gabriel. You will be VERY lucky if they last you 2 years. Bilstein HD on the other hand are the best shocks and struts you can buy -- at any price. They will still be performing like brand new in 10 years. (BTW: Bilstein is OEM supplier for Mercedes)

Personally, I went with a compromise: I just installed Bilstein Touring/Economy shocks and struts on my brick. They are an excellent value at $40 each. (in my humble opinion)
