Parking brake lever - how to access mechanism

'86 240dl Wagon. My parking brake lever won't latch. In a previous post someone suggested shooting some PB Blaster through the handle, by way of the space between the release button and the plastic housing. That didn't work. Is there any way to access the internal mechanism? It seems like short of tearing off the plastic housing, it is not possible. Replacing the lever looks like a major ordeal.
