no brake lights 900 1992

Dear Augie,

Good p.m. If all of the brake lights are out, the bulb failure relay may have failed. I take it that the burned-out bulb warning light did not come on.

This relay - a burnt orange round plastic can - is located on the relay block. It is behind the fuse block. The fuse block is behind the front center console ashtray. You will need to move the shift lever towards the rear of the car.

Press the release bar under the ashtray. Remove it.

Remove the bezel (plastic face plate) around the cigarette lighter. Pry gently on the side closest to the passenger seat. When you remove the bezel, you'll see two Philips head screws. Remove them.

You can then remove the storage tray.

All of the relays will be visible. The fuel pump relay is rectangular and white. I believe it is in the second row, on the right (the side closest to the driver's seat).

The bulb failure relay is easily identified by its color and the fact it is round.

I'd recommend getting a couple at a salvage yard. If one restores the brake lights, you know the original was bad.

You should also check the grounds for the lights. If you car is a wagon, the ground points are just under the rear edge of the carpeted side-panels of the cargo bay.

For other issues, see the FAQs. For example, if the radiator is the original, CHANGE IT NOW. 940 radiators have about an 8-year working life. The plastic gets brittle, and tends to crack and then break, where the hoses attach. When this happens, you suffer catastrophic coolant loss.

Hope some of this helps.

Enjoy your 940 - a nicely appointed armored personnel carrier!

Yours faithfully,

spook
