Shimmy in front end 200 1991

'91 245. Ever since I got it, there's been a little shimmy when I get on the brakes.. but not all the time, maybe only 20% of the time. Lately, every once in a while, the steering wheel will start shaking a little when I'm driving down the highway. If I give it a little left bias, it goes away, if I give it a little right bias, it shakes the wheel. Then it goes away again entirely for a while.

I realize I need to get under there and start checking ball joints and tie rod ends but thought I'd throw this out there in case someone had a similar situation and knew the likely culprit.

Thanks,
