87 240 driver's side wheel problems 200 1984

Let's start with the obligatory "don't drive it" statement.

Have you checked in the wheel well to see what the problem might be? Compare to the other side of the car. As bad as it sounds, I think you will see the cause immediately.

If I remember correctly, it is not uncommon for the 240 spring seats to break away from the strut tube especially in the rust belt. This would be my fist suspicion.
