960 transmission question

help

error message tells me I have a "bad" solinod the volvo part number is 3515644 cost of $ 250.00 No one seems to be able to tell me what this part controlls- does. How do I know If I really need to change the part out.. car drives fine no tranmission problems ( presently) I have cleared the flasshin lights from dash now what?? What are risk if part fails while car is being driven... any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreicated....error code is 3.1.4.
