82 245 runs only when #15 post on coil is connected directly to battery 200

that is the brown wire that runs from starter to coil,if i disconnect either wire;brown ,red and white on other coil terminal,or the 12 volt source the car stops running,can it be the starter? the connection is good. if it is the ignition switch how can i test it? or replace it?would it be harmful to the engine to just have an on/off switch on that 12 volt lead from the battery?[ the car has a new wiring harness] thanks.....kris
