Pinging 240 200 1986

My wife's 245 was having a problem with ping even on 93 octane. So I checked the timing. According Bentley the timing should be at 12 deg +/- 2 degrees btdc. It timed at 14. So I backed it off to 12. Now it does not ping IF I burn premium otherwise it still pings some but not as much. Even worse the car has become very cold natured since I re-timed it. My plugs are the recommended heat range. The motor has 300k miles but does not use enough oil between oil changes to need top off oil. I fear a build up of carbon in the combustion chamber but I am hoping someone might have other easier to fix ideas.

Thanks in advance.
