Howling noise 200 1988

Hey guys,

I Have an 88 240 DL with a 5 speed trans and 135k miles. Last week it started making a whistling sound at speeds of 45\55 mph that came and went. This week the whistling has changed to a deeper howling noise that occures at lower speeds, for example, comming to a stop, again it comes and goes. It sounds like it's comming from around the trans area but I'm not sure. The car runs great other than the intermittent noise. Any Ideas are greatly appreciated.

Ps: I also have an 87 240 DL auto trans
