follow up to my rattling problem (drum roll.......) 200

.....it was my brand new cat!

The problem got worse and more consistent, so it was easier for me to pinpoint it. Thanks to all with your excellent suggestions.

FWIW, this was a Bosal cat from FCP Groton, less than six months old. Rattling away like an old tin can with a bunch of rocks in it. It's going to be a hassle to get a refund, living on the opposite coast. Live and learn. Next time if I want to go with the cheap cat I'll probably get one from the local Autozone so any return problems can be taken care of right away without any shipping charges or hassles.
