Static through the radio caused by brakes (Hmmm......)

Ok, so I am a sports radio junkie and listen pretty exclusively to am. I have the following issue: the radio works fine, until I hit the brakes. Once I hit the brakes, intense static erupts from the radio, making it unlistenable. I have since discovered that turning the lights on and off fixes it. Go figure. Particularly, it is the off that does it, on does nothing. This is not a problem on the highway, where brakes are not in use for long periods, but I am rapidly tiring of trolling for law enforcement by flashing my lights during the day and turning them off briefly at night as I cruise around town. Any suggestions of why this is happeneing? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
