chugging sound 200 1987

I have an '87 240 with 190,000 miles, and lately there's been a noticeable chugging sound from the engine on acceleration, especially up hills. It seems to accelerate ok, but the engine has never sounded this loud before. On the flat it smooths out and sounds normal. I changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor, but to no effect. Ideas greatly appreciated.
