Coolant leak near the back of the engine?? 200 1989

It's coming from where the heater hose connects at the back of the engine head. My question is this: Has anyone ever had this problem? Car started running hot, we pulled over and lots of steam. Managed to get car home by stopping three or four times, letting engine cool off, then refilling coolant reservoir. As soon as you start pouring in coolant, there was water running out of the back side of the engine. Best I can tell (it was dark then...haven't looked at today)..I think it's the heater hose(s). Was worried that maybe the heater pipe broke...or even worse...the head gasket blew or something. I checked the engine oil...no problem. Help!!
