If its anything like mine it will only get worse, so you may as well bite the bullet.
There is some good reading available here so check out sililar posts.
If you don't buy the kit, I believe that 1/8th lining is a must and I'm sure an upholsterer or some kind soul here would put you on to the right adhesive.
