Check Engine light - how to read? 900

I've got a 1995 960 wagon with 170k. The check engine just came on and I was wondering if there was a way to read or diagnose what’s wrong? I ask because I have a Mercedes that has a small button and LED in the engine bay that will blink X number of times for any given problem. I cross reference the number I get to a list of all possible fault codes and BAM, I know what to fix.

anyways, I'm just trying to find out what trips the check engine light.
