Dipstick not staying in tube 700 1985

Over the past 2 days I have noticed oil on the driveway from my 85 760T. Due to back pain I didn't open the hood until this afternoon. I noticed oil had been splattered over about a square foot of hoses and "whats its" in the vicinity of the dip tube. My son attempted to remove much of the splattered oil but some remains. I tried positioning the dipstick back into its tube but it doesn't really want to stay down. When I feel better I will assess the situation more thoroughly. In the meantime, I will add some oil and keep searching through these forums.

What causes a dipstick to come unseated from the tube and stick out about 1/2 inch?
